Why I don’t apologize for my faith on air anymore

On the moment Flor decided to stop softening who she is for a microphone — and what happened when she did.

Why I don’t apologize for my faith on air anymore

For a long time I had a version of myself I kept for work. She was professional, measured, careful. She was bilingual and bicultural and very good at holding the room. She never led with her faith, because leading with your faith in a newsroom is a fast way to be quietly dismissed.

I knew this. I had watched it happen to other people. So I learned the art of the careful answer — the kind that neither confirms nor denies, that threads the needle of neutrality so precisely that no one could accuse you of anything.

Then something happened, and I cannot even tell you exactly what it was. It was not one moment. It was more like the slow accumulation of moments in which I noticed, clearly and without drama, that I was tired of that version of myself. That the careful answers were costing me something I could not afford to keep paying.

I started to let my faith show. Not performatively — not as a brand move or a content strategy. Just honestly. I started answering the question people were actually asking instead of the safer version of it. I started saying, when it was true, that what had sustained me in a particular season was prayer. That my sense of purpose was rooted in something larger than ratings or followers or the approval of people I barely knew.

The response surprised me. Not universally — there were people who wrote me off immediately, and I had braced for that. But there were also people who exhaled. Who wrote to tell me that they had been waiting for someone who looked like me and sounded like me to say the thing they were afraid to say in their own lives.

That is what faith does when you let it be real: it finds the people who needed to know they were not alone in it. And that, I have decided, is worth more than any version of me that keeps her answers careful.
